My review of The Goddess Test

18/02/12 - The Goddess Test (The Goddess Test #1) by Aimee Carter - Released 11th April 2011

A fun and exciting read, which is highly addictive.

The Goddess Test (Goddess Test, #1)
It's always been just Kate and her mom—and her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear her mother won't live past the fall.
Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld—and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.
Kate is sure he's crazy—until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess.
I didn't know what to expect when I opened up The Goddess Test. I had a brief idea of what I thought the book was going to be about, but I was wrong. The plot of the book will surprise you and hook you in. Kate has nothing left in her life, her mother is dying, she has nothing left to live for, no purpose in life. Until Henry shows up. He needs Kate to take a test, but everyone who's tried before her, has failed.
Main Characters
Kate: The main character, strong and confident. A very enjoyable character who I feel a strong connection with. She's just like any other girl, but she has a unique personality that you can't help but love. She has an ill mother with severe cancer. Kate would do anything to slow down the process or stop it completely, a little more time is all she needs. The decisions and sacrifices she makes will leave you in awe.
Henry: A God. Literally! He is King of The Underworld. And DAMN, he is a hot one. He's only fallen in love with one girl, Persephone, but she broke his heart like you could never have imagined. He thinks that no one can replace her, the void in his heart that he thinks no one else can fill. He is a tortured man, who is forced to go on with his life knowing he sent innocent girls to their deaths. He hopes that Kate can change that. Can be his Queen. I really did like Henry, eventhough he won't show his real emotions sometimes. I would have liked a more detailed description of him.
The Plot
Kate has to take 7 tests. If she passes she will be Henry's wife and spend 6 months every year at his palace (I like calling it that). But if she fails she will be sent back to the real world with no memory of their encounter, and for Henry? He will fade and someone else will take the thrown.
Hmmmm, so you see these 7 tests? I thought they were PHYSICAL tests, like The Hunger Games. I thought Kate would have to swim across lakes, fight dragons, beat demons, find her way out of dangerous mazes, etc. That's ACTUALLY what I thought! I couldn't help but laugh at myself when I read what the tests were. I thought The Goddess Test was a romantic-action sort of thing, but the tests are purely based on things within reach. I won't say any more!!
I must say, I do like the paperback cover more than the hardback cover. The PB cover has swirls! It's gold! I think it looks really gorgeous. The girl? She looks a bit like a brunette barbie, but, nevertheless, really pretty.
Inspiring Quote:
“Keep trying until you have no more chances left.”
I definitely won't forget that one in a hurry! I wanted to share this quote with you all because I've realised that it's true, and that it is truly inspiring.
The Good
- I enjoyed ALL the characters, they all had interesting and unique personalities.
- The plot was addictive!
- Henry. Yum, yum.
- Some really emotional scenes that made me cry.
- Beautifully written.
The Bad
- I would have liked more description. I wanted a clearer picture of Henry and Kate in my head, but it's kinda hard when all the information you have about them is their hair colour!
Overall, a very enjoyable book! I loved it and so glad that I bought it. It has some really emotional scenes that really hit you hard. This is Aimee's debut novel and I think she's done a brilliant job with it.
I rate this book:
4? 4.5? Naaaa, 4.9 Falling Books!

  1. I love retellings of Greek myths. This sounds great.

    Lovely review. :)

  2. Thank you for your review! I have actually been wanting to read this book. I like how you broke down the main characters a little bit and I do appreciate that you didn't mention what the tests were. LOL Sometimes I hesitate reading reviews for fear that I'll read something that I feel is a bit of a spoiler.

  3. I gotta admit that I am quite obsessed with Greek myths. I've read most of them and I must say, the story between Hades and Persephone is one of the stories that interest me the most.
I'm gonna try reading this retelling of the said myth. And based from your reviews, I think I'm gonna love it. I'm also intrigue about what those seven tests are. I wonder what you mean with "purely based on things within reach". Hmmm. I'm gonna see for myself.
    Thanks for the review! :)

  4. GAH! The moment I read Greek mythology I added it to my wishlist!! Now I want it more and faster!

  5. Characters really make stories for me and I liked Kate as well. Great review

  10. Thanks for the great review! Im definitely reading this now!

  11. Thanks for this review! You've convinced me! I'm glad that the main character isn't an annoying one. haha. And I love that quote! Very inspiring for sure.

  13. looking forward to read goddess interupted...i love henry :)

  14. I want to read that book, my friend recomended this book too^^

  15. This book gets a bad rap, by a lot of people. I am glad that I didn't let the negative dissuade me from The Goddess Test. I loved it. It wasn't perfect. You know what though? I just didn't care. I was hooked into this story, in a big way. Then Goddess Interrupted came out, and it did not disappoint. I can't wait to see how Kate and Henry's story ends.

  16. I've read reviews that have negative responses about the book and I've been hesitant if I'd give it a try. Maybe I will but not my priority. Thanks for the review! :)
