My review of Any Love But Mine

Any Love But Mine by Debbie Davies
Release Date: March 3, 2012
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon

Any Love But MineLook but don't touch has never been more true...

The gods forbade her to love, but love is a powerful force. Acacia has been created purely for Eros' pleasure but discovers within moments of being summoned into his presence that he has no interest in her whatsoever. Rejected, she is banished to Earth to serve as Eros' minion with the task of promoting the blissful state of love among all those around her, a state she must never indulge in with a human being herself on pain of immediate destruction.

And then comes Josh, someone whose power of attraction over Acacia is so intense she will find it utterly impossible to resist him. But is he human? Is he a god? Or is he a trick of the gods? And what would happen should they kiss?

Any Love But Mine is a Greek myth retelling with an interesting twist. The book is exciting with lots of fun characters to enjoy.

Acacia is a girl who was created to make humans fall in love with their soul mates by matching their auras. But when she meets Josh, she notices he does not have an aura. Could he be a god? Or could he be a trick of the gods? And why is Acadia so drawn to him?

I thought that Any Love But Mine had a really good plot that could have been explored a bit more. One thing I did not like about the book was the insta-love. The first time Acadia sets her eyes on Josh she is immediately attracted. A week later; I LOVE YOU! Yeah, it was annoying. Looking past the romance side, I did enjoy the overall plot and exciting twist at the end.

I did not get along with Acacia, the main character. I found it hard to connect with her. She does whatever she wants, ignoring all threats and warnings. She puts everyone in harm's way and is absolutely oblivious to what's going on around her.

Any Love But Mine was interesting and I am glad that I gave it ago. If you do decide to purchase an eBook, I would like to warn you about the lack of punctuation. The book ends with a cliffhanger so make sure you look out for the sequel!

Waiting on Wednesday (18)

Hey,

This week I'm waiting for...
Shades of Earth (Across the Universe, #3)
Shades of Earth (Across the Universe #3) by Beth Revis
Release Date: January 15, 2013
Amy and Elder have finally left the oppressive walls of the spaceship Godspeed behind. They're ready to start life afresh--to build a home--on Centauri-Earth, the planet that Amy has traveled 25 trillion miles across the universe to experience. But this new Earth isn't the paradise that Amy had been hoping for. Amy and Elder must race to uncover who--or what--else is out there if they are to have any hope of saving their struggling colony and building a future together. But as each new discovery brings more danger, Amy and Elder will have to look inward to the very fabric of what makes them human on this, their most harrowing journey yet. Because if the colony collapses? Then everything they have sacrificed--friends, family, life on Earth--will have been meaningless.

This trilogy has been absolutely breathtaking with endless twists and I am eagerly waiting for it to arrive in my hands. But, I absolutely freakin' hate the cover. WHAT IS IT?! Let's look at the previous covers.
Before:

Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1)A Million Suns (Across the Universe, #2)Shades of Earth (Across the Universe, #3)
After:
Across the UniverseA Million Suns (Across the Universe, #2)Shades of Earth (Across the Universe, #3)

I preferred the old covers! They're so pretty! The new covers fit the book but I don't think it would catch my eye in a bookshop.

Sweet Venom Blog Tour + Giveaway

Hey,

This is my stop on the Sweet Venom blog tour! If you haven't heard of Sweet Venom then here's the cover and blurb:
Sweet Venom

Sweet Venom (Medusa Girls #1) by Tera Lynn Childs
Release Date: September 4, 2012
Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.

If the name of the book sounds familiar then you've probably seen the US cover some where. The book came out in September 2011 in the US, and it's now published in the UK!
Sweet VenomSweet Venom (Medusa Girls #1)
UK | US
Earlier this week, Tera picked her ideal cast for Sweet Venom! What do you think?

TERA: I'm always bad at casting characters with actors who might actually be able to play the role--they're usually highly inappropriate choices like Shakira--but here's who I imagine (and a role in which they were the right age/had the right look to pull it off)...
Grace: Natalie Portman (Garden State)
Gretchen: Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars)
Greer: Hayden Panettiere (Bring it On)
Nick: Paul Walker (Varsity Blues)
Milo: Adrian Grenier (Drive Me Crazy)
Thane: Brian J. Smith (Stargate Universe)

About the Author:
Tera Lynn ChildsTera Lynn Childs is the award-winning author of the mythology-based OH. MY. GODS. and GODDESS BOOT CAMP, the mermaid tales FORGIVE MY FINS, FINS ARE FOREVER, and JUST FOR FINS (July 3rd, 2012), and a new trilogy about monster-hunting descendants of Medusa beginning with SWEET VENOM and SWEET SHADOWS (September 4, 2012). Tera lives nowhere in particular and spends her time writing wherever she can find a comfy chair and a steady stream of caffeinated beverages.

My review of Sweet Venom:
Sweet Venom is the first book the Medusa Girls series. Full of crazy, mythical monsters and kick-butt action, get ready to meet Medusa's descendants in this fun and entertaining YA novel.

Grace, Gretchen and Greer are all three teenage girls who were born to fight monsters in the human realm as descendants of Medusa. Three girls who look the same, but with three different lives to live. Can they finally come together to fight the monsters that lurk in plain sight?

I absolutely adore the idea of this book! Descendants of Medusa? Come on, that's crazy! Childs manages to weave an interesting and romantic tale that will please fans of of mythology everywhere.

First, I'm going to introduce the sweet and clever Grace, who is trying to fit in at school when she moves to San Francisco. She is blissfully happy and crushing on her brother's best friend, until she sees a monster walk into a restaurant. And even more shocking when she sees a girl who looks exactly like her turns up to fights the monster.

Gretchen, a strong and independent young lady who is passionate about her job of fighting monsters, even if she to stay up half the night tracking them down. Hunting monsters half the night does not leave her any energy to deal with the annoying, but handsome, Nick, who is determined to win Gretchen's heart.

The book was, overall, very good! I loved the action, the hint of romance between the characters and the mysteries. I can't wait for the sequel, Sweet Shadows. If you love Greek myths this is a must read for you guys!

Templar Publishing has kindly offered ONE copy of SWEET VENOM for a giveaway! This giveaway is for UK only. Sorry, international readers!

My review of The Forsaken

The Forsaken (The Forsaken #1) by Lisa M. Stasse
Release Date: August 2, 2012
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon | The Book Depository

The Forsaken (The Forsaken, #1)Alenna Shawcross is a sixteen-year-old orphan growing up in a police state formed from the ashes of Canada, the US and Mexico after a global economic meltdown.

But when she unexpectedly fails ‘the test’ - a government initiative which supposedly identifies teens destined to be criminals - she wakes up alone on a remote island reserved for the criminally insane.

Terrified and confused, she soon encounters a group of other teen survivors battling to stay alive, including Liam, a boy who will become her love... and her lifeline.

Soon Alenna makes the terrifying discovery that there’s more to the island (and her past) than she could ever have guessed... But who can she trust? And can she ever escape?

The Forsaken has been compared to The Hunger Games quite a lot and, in some ways, I do agree with that, but it does have a very unique plot and a series of crazy events that can only be summed up as an amazing adventure.

When you are sixteen years-old, you are required to take a test that will identify whether you are destined to be a criminal. Those unlucky teens are sent to a deadly island full of the previous teens before them, who have most likely gone insane. And that's exactly where Alenna Shawcrass has been sent to. She has to learn how to survive, who to trust and figure a way to get off the island with the help from Liam, a boy who she might be falling for, before it's too late.

The Forsaken was very, very good! I enjoyed the mystery, the action, the romance and just the whole epic adventure! The book had me from the first page and I finished it in one good sitting. The characters were great, they all had interesting personalities and crazy secrets that were just simply unpredictable and changed the story line dramatically.

I knew I would love this book from the moment I read the blurb. I love the whole idea of being stranded on an island and trying to survive, it's just so exciting!! This book did not disappoint. The main character, Alenna, had to learn to trust and survive in the deep in the jungle with attacks from the dangerous opposing tribe.

The Forsaken is definitely worth checking out if you love the dystopian or thriller genre. I can not wait to read The Uprising, which is the next exciting installment.

My review of Seeking Crystal

Seeking Crystal (Benedict #3) by Joss Stirling
Release Date: October 16, 2012
GoodreadsAmazon UK | Amazon | The Book Depository

Seeking Crystal (Benedict, #3)Sparks will fly . . . Passion will ignite . . .

Crystal Brook has always been the dud Savant in her family; paranormal powers just aren't her thing. Dropping out of school with a clutch of 'E' grades and no future, she lives in the shadow of her high-flying sister Diamond. On a trip to Denver, a chance encounter with the dashing Benedict brothers leaves Diamond head over heels in love and engaged to be married. Crystal, on the other hand, is unimpressed by their charms . . . in fact no boy can annoy her as much as Xav Benedict!

Back in Venice, their families assemble for Diamond's wedding and a powerful enemy seizes the opportunity to attack. Crystal and Xav must join forces to save their loved-ones, unlocking a secret that, until now, has lain deeply buried . . .

Seeking Crystal is the third book in the intriguing and extremely gripping Benedict series. If your looking for a set of books to get obsessed over this year, make sure you pick up this series.

Crystal Brook doesn't seem to have paranormal powers like she should have been born with. She's not clever, she's not pretty and, to rub it all in her big nose, she's always been in the shadow of her successful older sister, Diamond. On a trip to Denver, a run-in with the gorgeous Benedict brothers leaves Diamond in love and engaged to be married with one of them. Crystal doesn't understand how everything could happen so fast, because unlike her sister she is unimpressed by the boys' charms. But could the most annoying of the boys, Xav, help her unlock a secret that could change Crystal's life?

Stirling does an incredible job at keeping readers hooked and desperate to read more after just a few pages. Her characters are entertaining and very realistic. I've really enjoyed the characters from her previous books in the series and it was great to see that they played a part in this book.

Moving away from the supporting characters, I was ecstatic to find out that this book was finally about Xav discovering his soulfinder. Those who have read the previous books will know that he is a sweet talker who cracks the best jokes. It was amazing to read about him and his blossoming relationship with Crystal; a very tall, dark-haired girl.

This book is told from the POV of Crystal. Even though she is from a Savant family, she does not have the powers she should have been born with. She isn't clever and she isn't pretty, but she is strong-willed and determined. When she and Xav meet, boy, do sparks fly! Xav gets on her nerves like no other boy has before. Believe me, their encounter is hilarious. Scratch that, all scenes with Xav and Crystal in the same room are hilarious!

Stirling does not disappoint fans with this extraordinary installment! The books just get better and better. New characters, more mysteries and lots more laughs to be had with the Benedict brothers. A fourth book? All I know is that it's going to be good.

If you are interested in reading Seeking Crystal then I would recommend you read the first two books, Finding Sky and Stealing Pheonix, because it will give you a better idea of the characters and the world the books are set in.

My review of Breathe

Breathe (Breathe #1) by Sarah Crossan
Release Date: October 11, 2012
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon | The Book Depository

Breathe (Breathe, #1)When oxygen levels plunge in a treeless world, a state lottery decides which lucky few will live inside the Pod. Everyone else will slowly suffocate. Years after the Switch, life inside the Pod has moved on. A poor Auxiliary class cannot afford the oxygen tax which supplies extra air for running, dancing and sports. The rich Premiums, by contrast, are healthy and strong. Anyone who opposes the regime is labelled a terrorist and ejected from the Pod to die.

Sixteen-year-old Alina is part of the secret resistance, but when a mission goes wrong she is forced to escape from the Pod. With only two days of oxygen in her tank, she too faces the terrifying prospect of death by suffocation. Her only hope is to find the mythical Grove, a small enclave of trees protected by a hardcore band of rebels. Does it even exist, and if so, what or who are they protecting the trees from? A dystopian thriller about courage and freedom, with a love story at its heart.

Breathe is one of the best post-apocalyptic books I've ever read! Action, romance and a very clear vision of the future, Breathe will keep springing surprises on you until the end.

Breathe is set in the future when there is no trees and the only place you could possibly survive is in the Pod. A big glass dome that supplies oxygen at a cost, it also separates the Premiums and the Auxilaries. The Auxilaries are considered lower class, they can not afford the extra oxygen that dancing and playing sports takes. On the other hand, The Premiums are rich enough to live a normal life and can take big gulps of air with no restrictions.

Alina is part of the secret resistance outside the Pod, but when a mission goes horribly wrong, she is forced to flee. She has two oxygen tanks and the unknown waiting for her on the other side. With help from Quinn, a Premium, and his friend Bea, an Auxilary, they manage to smuggle Alina through security and out into the wide world. Away from the Pod they unearth a big secret, but will they stay alive long enough to tell anyone?

As soon as I read the blurb for this book I just knew that I would love it. Come on! A future with no trees? That's wicked! I had the best time reading this book. I enjoyed the plot, the characters and the unpredictable twists that Crossan has wonderfully brought together.

The book is told from three POVs; Alina, the rebel, Quinn, the Premium, and Bea, the Auxilary who is a friend of Quinn's. The three characters all have different things going on it their lives and it was really interesting to dive into each of their stories. I would have liked some more description and detail of some of the minor characters that appear half-way through the book.

I think Breathe is extremely well-written, and I am looking forward to reading the sequel, Resist. Fans of the post-apocalyptic genre should definitely check this one out as soon as possible!

Hey,

I'm so excited to be part of the blog tour for one of my favourite books: Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins!

This blog tour is hosted by the amazing Amber at Fall Into Books, make sure you click HERE and check out the rest of the tour stops.

For those of you who aren't sure what Sweet Evil is about then read the blurb below. Oh, and don't forget to watch the awesome trailer!!
Sweet Evil (The Sweet Trilogy, #1)
Sweet Evil (Sweet Trilogy #1) by Wendy Higgins
Release Date: May 1, 2012
Embrace the Forbidden

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?
This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.

Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She's aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but Anna, the ultimate good girl, has always had the advantage of her angel side to balance the darkness within. It isn't until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He's the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

It sounds incredible, doesn't it? Well, you can read my review HERE and you can also read the first EIGHT chapters HERE!

Now, for your reading pleasure, here is an interview with the amazing...WENDY HIGGINS!

How did you feel when you first saw Sweet Evil in a bookstore?
That was a surreal moment for me. I pretty much geeked out and got all giddy.

In less than 20 words tell everyone around the world why they should read Sweet Evil (apart from the fact that it is amazing and one of the hottest books of 2012).
Sweet Evil is a story about children of demons who risk their lives when they choose love instead of hate.

Is there anything you wish you had added in Sweet Evil, or is there anything you wish you could change about it?
I think I added everything I wanted, but there are two major errors I would change! It’s so
embarrassing…an incorrect line of German during the Summit scene, and the word “astrology”
is accidentally used instead of “astronomy” (which is especially frustrating since I totally know
the difference, duh!) It’s crazy the stuff that slips through the editing process.

Kopano or Kaidan?
Kaidan, of course. I LOVE Kope, but Anna’s heart is with Kai.

What's your favorite YA book?
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Wendy, lots of readers are completely in love with Sweet Evil...Could you give us a tiny (preferably big) hint of what you have in mind for the sequel?
Teehee...okay, let’s see. Well, there’s more Kope, but less Jay. The sequel focuses more on just the Neph, and a few new Neph characters are introduced. We’ll get lots of Kaidan time, too, don’t worry. Anna will do some growing up and maturing. (We’ll see more Jay again in book three.) Oh, and I almost forgot. There will be kissing. Lots of kissing...

About Wendy:
After earning a bachelors in Creative Writing from George Mason University and a masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Radford, Wendy taught high school English until becoming a mommy. Writing Young Adult (YA) stories gives her the opportunity to delve into the ambiguities of those pivotal, daunting, and exciting years before adulthood.
