My review of Article 5

Article 5 (Article 5 #1) by Kristin Simmons
Release Date: January 31, 2012
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon | The Book Depository

Article 5 (Article 5, #1)New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren't always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it's hard for her to forget that people weren't always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It's hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.

Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.

That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings—the only boy Ember has ever loved.

Article 5 is another brilliant addition to the dystopian genre. I couldn't put it down! It has an amazing plot and extraordinary characters! If you enjoyed Divergent or Eve then I think this one is the one for you!

Ember Miller lead an ordinary life. Until her mother was arrest for breaking Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. To make matters worse, one of the officers who arrested her mother was Chase Jennings. The only boy Ember has ever loved and cared for, but he isn't like he used to be. He's changed. And Ember doesn't know what to do to bring him back.

I really enjoyed Ember's voice. I didn't mind listening to her problems and worries. She is a very strong and courageous character who, in many ways, reminded me of Tris from Divergent. I loved reading about her relationship with Chase, from start to finish that boy had me swooning! Handsome, confident, clever, have I mentioned the fact that he is so handsome?

The book was action packed and full of exciting twists! It was slightly predictable at times but apart from that, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Kristen Miller has delivered a book that will appeal to many fans of young-adult fiction. I can't wait to find out what she has got installed for us next!

Overall, Article 5 is a fun and daring book that will leave you anxiously awaiting for it's sequel.

  4. I loved this book! I loved how for once the main character is a teen and remembers the before of the society. Usually they grow up accepting it and then rebel.
