My review of Struck

Struck by Jennifer Bosworth
Release Date: May 8th, 2012
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon | Book Depository

An electrifying novel!
StruckMia Price is a lightning addict. She’s survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.
Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a travelling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.
Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but she fears he isn’t who he claims to be. In the end, the passion and power that brought them together could be their downfall. When the final disaster strikes, Mia must risk unleashing the full horror of her strength to save the people she loves, or lose everything.
Struck is a book packed full of suspense and blossoming romance. Jennifer Bosworth has written a wonderful and exciting debut novel that will have readers' wishing for more.

Who wouldn't want to read a book about a girl who has been struck by lighting and is now a lighting addict? Come on, we've all heard of chocolate addicts and alcohol addicts, but lighting addicts? That's just mad! Which is exactly why I wanted to read to this book. The plot is unique and like nothing I have ever heard about before.

It all starts with a girl, Mia, who gets hit by lightning over and over again and doing her best to keep her family alive after an earthquake that left her town in tatters. It doesn't help when there's mad religious groups trying to get her on their side. Mia doesn't know what to do. Her brother, Parker, wants to join one group, while her mother has been completely brainwashed by the other group's leader, Prophet, who talks about nothing except God. And to make matters worse, there's a beautiful guy stalking her house and messing everything all up.

When I picked up the book and read this,

"Mia Price is a lightning addict."

I expected the story to go into more depth and use this line to the full. Instead, I was left with a story that had too much spiritual connections! I'm not very keen with books that go on and on about God. I'm sorry guys, but I'm just not that type of person who can sit through that. I know that the whole religious thing played a big part in the story I just didn't show much interest in it.

However, one thing (or should I say person?) got me through the religious madness. Jeremy! The love and interest of the main character. The mysterious stalker! Or, how Mia would describe him,

"Jerk. Beautiful, beautiful jerk."

Jeremy was the one who got me through the lows of this book. He pulled me through. Yes, with his startling blue eyes and lovely dark hair and his likeable personality. He plays a really important part in the story, with his strange warnings and unique powers. I took pleasure in reading the ever-growing romance between him and Mia! It was sweet, it was cute, I just loved it!

Even though I had a few issues with some of the scenes, I thoroughly enjoyed Struck. It wasn't exactly what I expected but I managed to get over that fairly quickly and was able to get into the unique story! It's full of surprising twists that you would never have seen coming and characters that you will easily fall in love with.

Overall, Struck is an exciting new addition to the young adult genre that everyone should try out.

  5. The concept of somebody being 'addicted to lightning' is very intriguing. The cover is amazing (well, most YA books have really gorgeous covers now) and the story-line seems really unique, and I don't really mind if it's contains a lot of 'religious madness' as you call it. Thanks for a great review!

  15. I'm glad that you enjoyed it so much. I didn't think that it lived up to the hype personally, but of course I don't care for romance that much. :) I liked hearing about the book from a differing view.

  18. I am definitely excited for Struck. One of the reasons I read reviews is because MOST of the time it gets my head out of the clouds excited about a book and back down to normal excited about a book. So thank you for your review of a book I was out of the clouds excited for!
