Waiting on Wednesday (62)

Hey,

This week I'm waiting for...
Until It Hurts to Stop
Release Date: Septerber 12, 2013
When you can’t trust anyone, how can you ever feel safe?

In seventh grade, Maggie Camden was the class outcast. Every day, the other girls tripped her, pinched her, trapped her in the bathroom, told her she would be better off dead. Four years have passed since then, and Maggie’s tormentors seem to have moved on. The ringleader of them all, Raleigh Barringer, even moved out of town. But Maggie has never stopped watching for attacks, and every laugh still sounds like it’s at her expense. The only time Maggie feels at peace is when she’s hiking up in the mountains with her best friend, Nick. Lately, though, there’s a new sort of tension between the two of them—a tension both dangerous and delicious. But how can Maggie expect anything more out of Nick when all she’s ever been told is that she’s ugly, she’s pathetic, she’s unworthy of love? And how can she ever feel safe, now that Raleigh Barringer is suddenly—terrifyingly—back in town?

I like the sound of this book. I adore contemporaries and always open to suggestions. Personally this one sounds very unique and I like the sound of the romance... Ooooo.

Fire Excerpt and Giveaway

Hey,

I'm here today to show you a YA fantasy romance called Fire. It's written by Heather James and it sounds AWESOME! Get ready for a story of the elements with awesome romance along the way!

Check out the cover and blurb below:
Fire (Elements of Power, #1)
Release Date: January 5, 2013
Is control over the elements a gift, or a curse?

Roxy thinks that she is in control of everything: with flames flaring at her fingertips and an equally fiery attitude, what more could she need? But then she meets Brae, a prince from a rival Realm, who turns her assumptions of superiority upside down.

Jasmine has none of Roxy’s confidence or intensity. But she does have a secret - and Brae - and she’s not going to give either up willingly.
-----------------------
Heather's given me an excerpt to share with you if you want a taster of what the book has to offer.
---------------------
Fire rose high into the trees on either side of me, closing in much faster than I'd anticipated. The air was thick with heat and smoke. I had to keep moving, fast. My heart hammered against my chest, keeping time with my feet as they pounded across the uneven ground. Above me, both suns hung high in the air, shining down mercilessly and adding more heat to that of the blaze.

I heard, rather than saw, the ball of flames whizzing through the air behind me, branches crackling to dust as it went. Moving on instinct, I threw myself to the ground, feeling the gritted earth graze my already filthy face and arms.

Only one thought ran through my mind: they were getting closer.

I pushed myself to my feet and set off again, faster than before. As I ran, I pushed a loose strand of hair - as red as the inferno surrounding me - away from my face. It had fallen out of its tie hours ago, but I hadn't stopped for long enough to fix it.

The flames kept coming, attacking me from both sides so that I had to duck and weave as I went. As I darted right, my feet stumbled on the uneven terrain. I couldn't keep this up for much longer; I needed to stand and fight.

"Come on then. I'm ready for you," I whispered to myself as I came to a stop. I wheeled around just in time to see a cloaked figure emerge from the trees to my left. The cloak gleamed with glittering red swirls that made it look as though it were aflame.

Where there should have been a face, I saw nothing but darkness.

Slowly, the figure raised his hands out towards me, toying with me; he thought I was beat. Flames sprung up at his fingertips and danced across his hands, gradually increasing in intensity.

But he was being complacent. He was nowhere close to winning this fight. While he put on his pyrotechnics show, my own fingertips burst into flames, burning faster and fiercer. Before he realised what was happening, I cast my hands out in front of me, sending a ball of fire straight at his chest. Thrown back by the force of the hit, he lay on the ground, motionless.

One down, two to go.

The flare receded from my fingers but the tingling sensation lingered; I was ready to attack as soon as I needed. Bending over the unconscious figure I pulled a shining silver ring from the index finger of his left hand. Shoving it into my pocket I set off again, but this time I headed left, in the direction the cloaked figure had emerged from.

I'd had enough of being hunted.

My review of Night School

Night School (Night School #1) by C. J. Daugherty
Release Date: January 1, 2012
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon | The Book Depository

Night School (Night School, #1)Allie's world is falling apart...

She hates her school. Her brother has run away. And she's just been arrested.

Again.

Now her parents are sending her away to a boarding school where she doesn't know a soul.

But instead of hating her new school, Allie finds she's happy there. She's making friends. And then there's Sylvain, a suave French student who openly flirts with her. And Carter, the brooding loner who seems to have her back.

Soon, though, Allie discovers Cimmeria Academy is no ordinary school. Nothing there is as it seems. And her new friends are hiding dangerous secrets.

Night School is a mysterious and thrilling book set in a spooky and slightly strange boarding school full of secrets. Be prepared to enter Cimmeria Academy; a school like no other...

Allie has been lost since her brother ran away. She's always getting into trouble and completely given up on everything. Her parents decide to send her away to a posh boarding school that they hope will straighten her up. Allie thinks that the school is going to be a nightmare, but surprisingly, Allie is quick to make friends and find that she is quite happy with the attention from Sylvian, an adorable French boy with a habit for flirting, and Carter; the loner of the school with secrets that Allie needs to uncover. She is quick to discover that the school isn't ordinary; the students being murdered is a sign for sure. But its also holding more secrets than anyone could ever imagine.

I was hooked it from the first page. Daugherty has a very likable and easy flowing writing style that I became lost in very quickly. I couldn't put the book down because I was so engaged in the story and was eager to find out how all the mysteries and dilemmas would be solved. Nope, there was no time for toilet breaks and cups of tea when there was some serious murdering business going on at a boarding school that demanded immediate attention.

Allie is an enjoyable character with a quirky and determined personality. I had a lot of fun reading from her perspective because she has a great sense of humor. Not to mention that her multiple entertaining encounters with Sylvian, the gorgeous French boy, and Carter, the dark and handsome loner, are absolutely adorable and, occasionally, swoon worthy. Though I didn't really take an immediate liking to either of them, I did have fun getting to know the two as the book progressed. Ooo, that sounds a bit strange. I meant: I had a fun time getting to know their PERSONALITIES along the way. ;)

Ah! One thing I must pick out is the setting. I loved exploring the creepy and mysterious setting of Cimmeria Academy. The tension could be felt at all times because throughout the book you're thinking: Anyone of these people could be the murderer; and they might be popping around the corner at any moment to kill our main girl here. But I don't want you being scared or thinking that this book is a horror all the way through, there are plenty of light-hearted and entertaining moments for your reading pleasure.

Night School is a chilling read that I would recommend to all those out there who want something a bit different and daring... aka, murder in a boarding school. I'm anxious to see what Daughtery has got instore for us next in the sequel Legacy.

My review of The Testing

The Testing (The Testing #1) by Joelle Charbonneau
Release Date: August 2, 2013
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon | The Book Depository

The Testing (The Testing, #1)Sixteen-year-old Cia Vale is honoured to be chosen for The Testing – a series of exams set by the United Commonwealth that selects the brightest young adults to become leaders of their war- stricken world. But when candidates start disappearing and Cia witnesses unimaginable horrors done in the United Commonwealth’s name it becomes clear that these are no ordinary exams, and Cia is forced to realise the truth: this is no longer about winning, but surviving.

Despite the fact that The Testing is has taken so much from The Hunger Games, I did enjoy it and couldn't put it down! Unlike The Hunger Games, it does have its own quirks, unique sub-plots and characters. I give this book high points for its action and fast-paced storyline, but it scores low for originality.

The Testing is a series of exams from the government that determines whether you have what it takes to go on to help them rebuild their world which has been left in ruins by war. Cia is chosen for The Testing, and so is her childhood friend Tomas; they aren't super close, but they know each other well enough to trust each other. But the government are hiding something, and they realise that winning the Testing might not be the end to all their problems.

So you can kind of see how The Testing has taken quite a lot from THG: the idea of the government, or the United Commonwealth in this case, not being entirely honest, the idea of the characters' relationships (Katniss and Peeta/Cia and Tomas), the idea of a big group of people that want to rebel against the government, etc.

Thankfully, Charbonneau does add her own ideas into the book as well to not make it a carbon copy of THG. The exams in the Testing process really intrigued and kept me on the edge of my seat. Especially one of the tests that involved all the candidates to find their way out of a dangerous and beast-infested wasteland. Yep, that was one of the best parts of the book!

Cia shares Katniss' strong and courageous personality. She is ready for almost anything and thinks everything over very carefully. I enjoyed her relationship with Tomas, as well. In the first half, everything went at a steady pace, but in the second half... that's where things start heating up for the two. No complaints here!

Even though I enjoyed the plot and what the characters had to offer, I'm going to have to dock some points for originality. I do believe that the author has more to give. Her writing style is very likable, and some of her ideas that she added into the book are original enough for me to think that she CAN come up with something completely her own. It makes me sad that she has taken so much from a previous very successful dystopian novel for her YA debut to be noticed.

The Testing is bursting with twists and turns. Danger is around every corner, so action and tension is never lacking. The book ended on a pretty good cliffhanger, setting itself up well for the sequel that I actually can't wait to get my hands on.

My review of Shudder

Shudder (Stitch #2) by Samantha Durante
Release Date: June 15, 2013
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon

Shudder (Stitch Trilogy #2)It's only been three days, and already everything is different.

Paragon is behind her, but somehow Alessa's life may actually have gotten worse. In a wrenching twist of fate, she traded the safety and companionship of her sister for that of her true love, losing a vital partner she'd counted on for the ordeal ahead. Her comfortable university life is but a distant memory, as she faces the prospect of surviving a bleak winter on the meager remains of a ravaged world. And if she'd thought she'd tasted fear upon seeing a ghost, she was wrong; now she's discovering new depths of terror while being hunted by a deadly virus and a terrifying pack of superhuman creatures thirsting for blood.

And then there are the visions.

The memory-altering "stitch" unlocked something in Alessa's mind, and now she can't shake the constant flood of alien feelings ransacking her emotions. Haunting memories of an old flame are driving a deep and painful rift into her once-secure relationship. And a series of staggering revelations about the treacherous Engineers - and the bone-chilling deceit shrouding her world's sorry history - will soon leave Alessa reeling...

Shudder is the sequel to the mindbending dystopian novel Stitch. Unlike Stitch, which is harder to categorise because of its mixed genres, Shudder is firmly set in the dystopian world with plenty of mysterious to keep us entertained.

Eventhough Shudder isn't set long after Stitch at all, but I found myself stumbling through the events trying to figure out what happened in the previous book. Fortuneately, Durante does a good job at reminding us of previous events, and I quickly fell back into the world of Paragon with our main characters Isaac and Alessa.

We also meet a few new characters as well as getting to know our old ones a bit better. This book focuses on the rebellion of the people and their plan of action against the system. We find out some much about the secrets the government are hiding, as well as given to opportunity to experience the dark depths of Paragon like never before.

In this book, Alessa is unsure about her feelings for Isaac because her old feelings for Joe are resurfacing. I felt really sad knowing that she was with Isaac but still thought of her ex. Though she does make a decision by the end that will satisfy fans. Also, the moments she spends with Isaac and completely and utterly swoon-worthy! I couldn't get enough of them.

I'm anxious to read Struck, which is the conclusion to the trilogy, and I predict a lot of action as well as more secrets to be uncovered! I can't wait to see what happens to our characters, Isaac and Alessa.

Frigid Trailer

Hey,

The trailer for Frigid by Jennifer L. Armentrout is now out! It looks absolutely amazing and I need the book right now! It is a new adult, but it's by Jennifer so it's a must read! Check out the cover and blurb below:
Frigid (Frigid, #1)
Release Date: July 15, 2013
For twenty-one-year-old Sydney, being in love with Kyler isn't anything new. They'd been best friends ever since he pushed her down on the playground and she made him eat a mud pie. Somewhere over the years, she fell for him and fell hard. The big problem with that? Kyler puts the 'man' in man-whore. He's never stayed with a girl longer than a few nights, and with it being their last year in college, Syd doesn't want to risk their friendship by declaring her love.

Kyler has always put Syd on a pedestal that was too high for him to reach. To him, she's perfect and she's everything. But the feelings he has for her, he's always hidden away or focused on any other female. After all, Kyler will always be the poor boy from the wrong side of tracks, and Syd will always be the one girl he can never have.

But when they're stranded together at a posh ski resort due to a massive Nor'easter, there's nothing stopping their red-hot feelings for each other from coming to the surface. Can their friendship survive the attraction? Better yet, can they survive at all? Because as the snow falls, someone is stalking them, and this ski trip may be a life-changer in more ways than one.

My review of Clockwork Princess

Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices #3) by Cassandra Clare
Release Date: March 19, 2013
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon | The Book Depository

Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices, #3)Tessa Gray should be happy - aren't all brides happy? Yet as she prepares for her wedding, a net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shadowhunters of the London Institute. A new demon appears, one linked by blood and secrecy to Mortmain, the man who plans to use his army of pitiless automatons, the Infernal Devices, to destroy the Shadowhunters. Mortmain needs only one last item to complete his plan. He needs Tessa. And Jem and Will, the boys who lay equal claim to Tessa's heart, will do anything to save her.

*Don't worry, fellow readers! No spoilers!!*

My emotions are all over the place after reading this book. I told myself I would take it slowly, but I couldn't put it down! So here I am: an emotional mess. I think most of it is the realisation that this it the end of the trilogy, but also because of the extreme roller-coaster that Cassandra Clare has taken me on over the last few years, and the fact that I have formed strong attachments to her characters.

I've always preferred this series to the Mortal Instruments, and I know that some others do too. May this be because of the setting and era or because of the gripping writing style, I'm not entirely sure. There's simply something that makes this series more memorable, more gripping, and way more emotional. And every time I think about it, the only conclusion I can draw up is the characters. Yep, the characters. It's the characters that make this book unforgettable. Each of them have their own unique personality, and they each have a different kind of connection towards each other. A different kind of relationship that not only fascinates me, but also urges me to read more.

Will and Jem. That's the first relationship I would like to talk about. The two are parabatai's, which is a Shadowhunter bond stronger than anything in the world. Each would do anything for the other because that's how strong Will and Jem's love is. Nothing romantic, just a bond stronger than any bromance you will ever experience in any other book. But of course if you've read the series, you will know that they are both in love with Tessa Grey, our main character. You will also know that Jem knows nothing about Will's love for her when he asks her to marry him. Does Will get in the way? Try to steal Tessa? Of course not. Because Jem and Tessa are the two that he loves the most and he wants them to be happy.

I must confess: I am team Will. I'm sorry, I know some of you guys hate "teams", but all it means for me is that I love Will a bit more than Jem. In Clockwork Angel, Will was the brooding guy with sarcastic comment for everything that someone could say. I found him entertaining, and even though he wasn't the nicest of guys, I fell for his character because I knew there was a reason behind all the hate inside him. Jem was the sweet guy with soothing words but he never really stole my heart like Will did. In Clockwork Prince, we found out out more of Will's past and how it's haunted him. I think we all fell a bit more for Will then, didn't we? Will Herondale; the boy with the dark hair and blue eyes. Come on, you gotta love him.
But my point is, from the start I've always wanted Will and Tessa to end up together, but I've also wanted Jem to get a happy ending, too. Well, I think you guys will happy to know that Clare delivers an ending that not only will leave you breathless, but also satisfy all readers. Yes, ALL readers.

I think I could go on about Will for a very long time so let's switch topics to Tessa.

Tessa is a determined and lovable character. She has been through so much since we met her in Clockwork Angel and she finally gets an ending! But before she can reach that point, she has to face Mortmain one last time. He wants her for himself; a weapon against the Clave, but Tessa and the Shadowhunters are not going down without a fight to the death!  Resulting in a load of action along the side the love-triangle we've been waiting for.

Tessa, Will and Jem are our three main characters, but in this conclusion we get to read about more than just their little romance problems. Gabriel and Gideon Lightwood are in dah house! (Well, institution) And boy, have they got their sights set or the girls of their dreams. Cecily Herondale, Will's younger sister, has decided to join the Shadowhunters and Gabriel has taken quite a fancy to the feisty young woman. In Clockwork Prince, we see the attraction between Sophie and Gideon Lightworm - oops - I mean Lightwood

I loved all the little romances going on around the institution! Especially with the crisis at hand, it felt like a nice break to read about two people who were happy and building a new connection. Very sweet. Cassandra is a very talented writer with an addictive and unique writing style, she manages to pack in so much emotion into this book that you will be sobbing buckets by the end. Actually, I started sobbing from the eleventh chapter.
image
I can't help but wish that THIS was the series that was being extended instead of The Mortal Instruments (TMI was only meant to have 3 books but was extended to 6). I'm simply not ready to accept the ending or to let go of this set of characters.

On the other hand, I have heard that Cassandra Clare has a lot of books coming up that are based in the Shadowhunter world! There's ten-book series coming out for Magnus Bane, another three-book series set in 1903 about the next generation of Shadowhunters after The Infernal Devices, and yet ANOTHER three book series set in 2012, Los Angeles about the new generation of Shadowhunters with another forbidden love called The Dark Artifices. There's a lot planned out for the upcoming years. I believe the publishers have planned all the books to be released from 2013/2014 until 2019, possibly even longer than that.

Clockwork Princess is one of the best book I've ever read. Ever. I know I've probably said this about other books but there's simply too many reasons to crown this book the best. The Infernal Devices is definitely one of my favourite series and I shall be buying all the different editions of the books... when I have money. I just want them all! I'm looking forward to Cassandra's new creations and to see if any of our characters from this series appear.

Thank you, Cassandra Clare, for taking me on this amazing and unforgettable journey.

Oh, before you all go. I recommend you read the epilogue (and chapter 11) with the song "Broken Strings" by James Morrison playing. I don't think I have ever cried so much in my life. Am I the only one who occasionally puts music on in the background when they read... okaybye.
