My review of Nightshade

02/01/12 - Nightshade by Andrea Cremer - Released 26th July 2011 (UK Edition)

A new take on wolves, with surprising and deadly twists.

Nightshade (Witches War Series)
Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything--including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

I loved the story, loved the plot, loved the characters, loved the dialouge, THE LIST GOES ON! This is the first book that I read which was about wolves (Apart from the Twilight Series), I was worried that it wouldn't be very good, but after I had finished this it....I was obssessed. I went on Ebay, Amazon, every single book website I knew, and searched for Wolfsbane. This book? Seriously addictive.

1) Characters
In this book, every character is unique, every character is different. Calla, our main character, our heroine, our leader, was a delightful young lady to read about. When times got tough, her alpha side shone through. She was brave, courageous, deadly, yet caring. She's just like any other girl, with the same needs, except she can't give into them. When she was with Shay, she became soft and vulnerable. It was cute.

You will either be a team Ren or a team Shay. For me? I'm team Shay all the way. Ren didn't quite do it for me. He came across as a user and the time of guy who thought of women as objects. But as I reached the last few pages of the book, my feelings changed. I realised he DID have a heart, he DID care about other people, etc...

2) The plot
The plot for this book was amazing thought out, with surprising twists that you'll never see coming. I enjoyed the tension, the suspense and Andrea's dramatic writing style. I liked reading through Shay's past and getting to know Ren a bit more. But also the small events that led up to the end of the book.

The romance? It was rich, it was real. For Calla? Confusing! One minute with Shay in the car. One minute with Ren in the toilet. Gosh, she must be fustrated with her self. Not being able to choose between two great guys.

My favourite quote:
Ansel, I'm not the sun, stop orbiting and get in here.

There was some humorous parts, some sad parts, some irritating parts and some scary parts. Nightshade was brilliant and I can't wait to read more of this trilogy!

I rate this book:

  5. I loved Nightshade as well. And I agree with you on the Shay/Ren thing. Originally, I thought of Ren as a player/womanizer, so I rooted for Shay, but in the end, I started to like Ren more and more.

  11. I really like how you separate the different points of the book for your reviews. It makes it a lot cleaner, a lot more easy to figure out where the good and the bad are. I can imagine it makes writing the actual review a lot easier as well. On to your actual review, it was a good honest review. Thanks for being honest when you write reviews whether they are good or bad. I actually have Nightshade sitting on my bookshelf unread. Every time I pick it up to read something else ends up in my hands somehow. It seems I have made a mistake in not sitting down and reading the book. I think I will rectify that soon!
