My review of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer #1) by Michelle Hodkin
Release Date: March 1, 2012
Goodreads | Amazon UK | Amazon | The Book Depository

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1)Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.

There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.

She’s wrong.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer was more than I could have hoped for. Creepy, mysterious and romantic, this book will sweep you off your feet and make you laugh out loud!

Mara Dyer wakes up in hospital with no memory of how she got there. Her friends were killed while she was left with minor bruises. How did this happen? No one knows. When Mara moves school and meets the alluring, Noah Shaw, she finds him irritating, annoying and a total jerk. But he knows something about Mara that she never knew about herself. And she needs to find out. Soon.

The book had me from page 1, I couldn't put it down! The characters were surprisingly funny with interesting personalities and juicy secrets. I wouldn't exactly say this book was a horror, but it was definitely creepy! From the cover, I thought it would be some weird paranormal romance with drowning involved; I was very wrong. It had nothing to do with drowning, more along the lines of a girl with unnatural abilities in a complicated situation.

Mara Dyer was a pleasure to read about. She was loyal, determined and caring. Her relationship with Noah had me rolling on the floor laughing. Those two are one entertaining couple! Noah Shaw, like any other boy in YA fiction, was hot with a cocky attitude. But as the book progressed we see more sides to him that were both good and bad.

Overall, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is a chilling and extremely enjoyable book that will have reader's on the edge of their seat. If your looking for something romantic, slightly creepy with small elements of comedy, then pick up this book! I can't wait to read the sequel!

  1. Creepy and mysterious, I love books like this! I'm interested on the UNBECOMING part, what was about her in the past that she has to "undo" sort of. That's the clincher for me.
